Unlocking the Serene Magic of Pharping: Your Guide to a Soulful Day Visit

Are you searching for an enlightening day trip in Kathmandu? Look no further than the captivating retreat program nestled within the sacred Asura Cave in Pharping. Known as Yanglesho among Tibetans, this revered location holds a unique, high-energy atmosphere for meditation. It’s where the eminent Buddhist master Padmasambhava, affectionately known as Master Rimpoche, attained enlightenment in the 8th century while practicing Vishuddha Heruka in conjunction with the sadhana of Vajra Kilaya within the upper cavern of Yangleshö, also known as the Asura Cave.

Pharping has garnered fame as a hub for meditation tours and retreats. Here, a dedicated group of monks partakes in prolonged closed retreats, infusing the cave with the transcendent energy of Buddha. The vibrations you’ll experience in Pharping are unparalleled; it’s a place like no other. Situated just an hour’s drive from the heart of Kathmandu, Pharping radiates the same sanctity as Bodhgaya, both serving as pivotal centers where people connect with divine energies.

The outskirts of Pharping boast numerous monasteries offering meditation retreats. Asura Cave is a prominent destination where individuals come to meditate and offer their reverence. Here, you’ll also find Tibetan prayer flags called “lugta” adorning the landscape, sending out positive vibrations into the universe, fostering peace—a captivating sight in Pharping. Adjacent to the Asura Cave, the Bajra Barahi Temple adds to the spiritual allure. Notably, on the upper left side of the temple’s entrance, you’ll discover a handprint etched in stone, leaving you in awe and contemplation.

Over the past 35 years, a curious phenomenon has unfolded in the southern part of the Kathmandu Valley, near Pharping. Below the sacred Asura Cave, venerated by Padmasambhava’s followers, a portion of a cliff has gradually begun to bulge outward. Remarkably, it has taken on the form of Tara, the female Buddha, and concurrently, the visage of Ganesh has also manifested. Explore the multifaceted aspects of Tara and be captivated by the chanting of Buddhist monks in the serene surroundings of Pharping.

“In the innermost recesses of the Asura Cave is a tunnel that connects this cave to the Yangleshö Cave down below, about half a mile away,” as described in tantric Buddhist texts. Although not a substantial opening, you can feel the breeze passing through this passage while seated nearby. Even though Padmasambhava could traverse solid matter effortlessly, he chose to use this narrow passage to travel between Yangleshö Cave and the upper Asura Cave. Feel the presence of Master Rimpoche in your meditation. The location also offers a magnificent vantage point to view the Kathmandu Valley, with the ancient cities of Patan and Bhaktapur appearing breathtaking from Pharping’s perspective.

Padmasambhava, often referred to as the Second Buddha, holds immense reverence in Mahayana Buddhism. In ‘The Request in Seven Parts to Padmakara, the Second Buddha,’ it is documented:

“In the stone cavern of Yangleshö in Nepal,

You achieved the practice of Yangdak, the ‘Substance of Extraordinary Delights,’

Freeing all obstacles and hindrances through Vajrakilaya;

And in this sacred place, you attained the siddhi of mahamudra:

We beseech Dorje Tötreng Tsal!

To the Lotus-born Master of Orgyen, we implore!

From ‘An Incredible Treasure of Blessings.’ In the biography of Master Rinpoche, it is narrated:

“Then, at Yangleshö, modern-day Pharping in Nepal, he practiced the sadhana of Yangdak Heruka with Shakyadevi, the daughter of a Nepalese king. Severe spirits brought about a long drought, marked by famine and disease, prompting Padmasambhava to seek guidance from his Indian teachers. Two individuals returned, bearing the tantras and commentaries of Vajrakilaya, and as soon as they arrived, the obstacles were pacified. Both Master Rinpoche and Shakyadevi attained the third vidyadhara level, known as the ‘vidyadhara of the extraordinary seal, or mahamudra.’ Master Rinpoche recognized that Yangdak is like a merchant engaging in trade, where success can be perfect, but so can the obstacles. In contrast, Vajrakilaya is akin to an armed escort; his role is to safeguard against obstacles and overcome them. Subsequently, Master Rinpoche combined the sadhanas of Yangdak and Vajrakilaya and bound the guardians of Vajrakilaya to protect the teachings.”

Embark on a transformative journey to Pharping, where spirituality, history, and natural beauty converge to create an unforgettable experience. Explore the sacred Asura Cave, soak in the powerful energies, and connect with the profound wisdom of Master Rimpoche. Pharping awaits, offering you a glimpse into the mystical heart of Nepal.
