This is an exotic trek that offers a closer peeking inside the lives of Chepang people. The trek through the Mahabharata range, at moderate altitude through less crowded, beautiful hillsides allows you to indulge in the life of the semi-nomadic Chepang people. The Chepangs are ethnic people with a distinct lifestyle who feed on fruits and roots and have unique cultures of their own. Chepang Hill Trek is an opportunity to realize the socio and cultural status of marginalized people in the bottom hill of Nepal. The indigenous Tibeto-Burman community inhabits the ridges of the Mahabharat mountain range of central Nepal.
Similarly, the shy and nomadic Chepangs have over the past two or three generations been more outwardly and semi-nomadic. They live in caves or thatched houses relying increasingly on production. Thus, they grow maize, millet, and bananas.
Generally, Chepang people practice Hinduism and Buddhism, however, they follow Animism. Their language is Tibet-Burman, Raute, and Raji. Chepang language is one of the rare languages which use a duodecimal counting system. In the same way, Lack of education, awareness, and health facilities, the people are backward in common society.
Only 15 percent of Chepangs are literate and almost 90 percent of Chepangs are below the poverty line. The school enrollment rate is very low and the drop-out rate is very high.
Chepangs possess vast indigenous knowledge about herbal medicines. In terms of food, fiber, medicine, housing materials, fodder, and various other needs.
