Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour – An Adventure Beyond the Himalaya
The Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour is an extraordinary overland journey into one of Nepal’s most distinctive Himalayan landscapes. The ride begins in the green hills of central Nepal and gradually climbs through the Kali Gandaki valley into a dramatic high-altitude desert of red cliffs, wind-carved valleys, ancient settlements, Buddhist monasteries and centuries-old Tibetan-influenced culture.
Upper Mustang lies in the rain-shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Its landscape is strikingly different from the lush middle hills of Nepal: barren plateaus, colourful cliffs, deep gorges and wide open valleys create an almost otherworldly riding experience. Nepal Tourism Board describes the region as geographically connected with the Tibetan Plateau and notes its distinctive cultural preservation and rain-shadow climate.
The journey leads beyond Kagbeni, through Chele, Samar, Ghami, Dhakmar and Charang, and finally to the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang, historically the capital of the Kingdom of Lo. From Lo Manthang, riders can explore the remarkable Chhoser cave area and, subject to route and border regulations, continue toward Kora La, near the Nepal–China/Tibet border.
This is much more than a motorcycle trip. It is a journey through Himalayan geography, Tibetan Buddhist heritage, ancient trade routes, sacred places, traditional villages and living mountain culture.

The vegetation gradually becomes thinner and the landscape increasingly dry.
From Jomsom, continue toward Kagbeni, an important historical settlement at the gateway to Upper Mustang.
