International Tolerance Day

Volunteering Program In Nepal

November 16 commemorates International Tolerance Day, every year. In fact, this is an UN-declared day that aims at creating public awareness of the dangers of intolerance. What propelled the idea was the increasing need to ensure people are aware of the negativity that stems from intolerance.

In 1995, the UN had declared a Year for Tolerance. The Declaration of Principles on Tolerance was formulated the same year by UNESCO on November 16. And the UN decided to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi’s 125th birth anniversary that year. By kick-starting the commemoration of International Tolerance Day in 1995.

Furthermore, the challenge of intolerance – thinking about people as ‘them’ and ‘us’- lies at the heart of sustainability. And work to address climate change. Free markets are about the efficient allocation of resources. Similarly, there are regional and domestic challenges that can range from political polarization to the question of how to move beyond genocide. Even at the most basic, personal level, our children need to learn how to deal with each other after fighting.

International Tolerance Day

The need for fairness is a universal truth for children. And builds on that as the basis for how they approach each other. The world in which we live can only improve their relationships and their approach to the social contract.

A focus on what we have in common, from responding to emergencies, doing no harm, and building a peaceful future together, can transform the way our societies work. Thus, Mutual understanding and dialogue underpin a better world.
